National Lottery funding for South Cliff Gardens

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund has awarded Scarborough Borough Council a grant of £4,665,700 towards the cost of a project to restore and improve the historic and much loved South Cliff Gardens in the Yorkshire coast town of Scarborough for current and future generations.

Chief Executive intends to retire from role

Jim Dillon, Scarborough Borough Council Chief Executive, has today announced his intention to retire from his role and leave the local authority at the end of June this year.

Jim's duties and responsibilities will remain the same until his departure and will include his usual Returning Officer role at this year's council elections.

Update on stabilisation works on former Futurist site

Willmott Dixon is re-sequencing some of the stabilisation works it is currently carrying out on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council on the former Futurist site.

The contractor will bring forward part of the planned backfill exercise on the site’s rear wall. This is an additional measure against possible movement and to alleviate the vibration that has been experienced by some of the site’s neighbours during the piling works in the last couple of weeks.

Mayor's Charity Ball tickets launch

The countdown to the annual charity ball hosted by the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Scarborough, got underway today (Friday 11 January).

The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Joe Plant and Mrs Margaret Plant, and members of the Mayor’s Charity Ball Committee gathered at the Town Hall in Scarborough to mark the start of the promotion of the Mayor’s Charity Ball, which will take place on Friday 29 March in the Ocean Room at Scarborough Spa.

Sponsorship scheme for rising sports stars

Up-and-coming athletes in Scarborough are being given the opportunity to receive funding from a local leisure provider as part of its athletes mentoring scheme.

Everyone Active is urging aspiring sports stars to apply for funding and support as part of its Everyone Active Sporting Champions scheme. An online application form will be open from Monday 21 January to Friday 22 February.

Stabilisation works on former Futurist site

We have issued the following statement today (Wednesday 9 January) to give the latest position about the stabilisation works being carried out on the former Futurist site.

Our priority and that of our contractor, Willmott Dixon, has always been to deliver the safest possible solution to maintain the stability of the slope at the rear of the site and protect the properties surrounding and adjacent to the site.

Tour Makers registration underway

Scarborough Borough Council is supporting Welcome to Yorkshire and ASO in promoting the registration for Tour Makers for the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire, which will take place later this year, between Thursday 2 and Sunday 5 May.

The race is now widely regarded as one of cycling's most dramatic and best supported events and simply would not be possible without the help of the incredible team of volunteer Tour Makers.

Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan is asking North Yorkshire residents how much they are willing to pay in their council tax bill for North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Setting the charge known as the precept is part of Julia’s role but, before she does that for the 2019/2020 financial year, she wants to know the view of the county’s taxpayers.
