Polling station review

We are consulting on proposed changes to the location of some polling stations in four of the borough’s wards due to the unavailability and unsuitability of previously used locations.

Changes are being recommended for Mayfield and Streonshalh wards in Whitby and Castle and Woodlands wards in Scarborough.

Celebrating 'Autumn Daze' in Peasholm Park

A new celebration of all things autumnal is coming to the beautiful surroundings of Scarborough's Peasholm Park later this month.

'Autumn Daze' Festival will take place in the oriental themed park on Saturday 26 October between 10am and 4pm featuring a whole range of free, autumn themed activities set against the colourful seasonal backdrop of the park's impressive woodland.

Grant approved for Lealholm Community Land Trust

Our Cabinet has today approved a funding grant of £17,936 to Lealholm Community Land Trust. The money will be used by the trust to carry out feasibility studies to progress a community-led housing scheme in Lealholm near Whitby.

The funding grant is being paid out from the Community Housing Fund, a scheme set up by Government in 2017 to enable the development of community-led housing schemes across the country. The council was awarded £1.86 million in December 2016 from what was then the Department of Communities and Local Government.

South Bay’s damaged chalets to be demolished

Historic beach chalets in Scarborough’s South Bay, damaged by the collapse of an adjacent retaining wall in March 2018, are set to be demolished to make way for the development of replacement chalets.

At a meeting today, our Cabinet agreed to the demolition of the chalets in front of the Clock Café and robust reinstatement of the retaining wall. A budget of £473,000 has been allocated for the project, which when complete, will create a development platform for the subsequent reinstatement of the chalets.

Counting down to Christmas in Scarborough

Scarborough will become a Grinch-free zone for six weeks from 14 November, as a cast of magicians, musicians, street performers, famous panto characters and Father Christmas assemble to help bring glitter, glee and glam to the town’s streets and stores as part of a new six-week festival, Counting Down to Christmas - with a mission to make Christmas shopping fun.

Majority of UK's over-65s not active enough

Research announced today, on International Day of Older Persons (Tuesday 1 October), has revealed that more than three quarters of over-65s do not hit the recommended exercise targets. This is despite the warnings that sedentary behaviour is linked to 70,000 deaths in the UK every year*.

A survey commissioned by local leisure operator, Everyone Active, revealed 78% of over-65s are not achieving the amount of weekly activity advised by the NHS, which includes 150 minutes of aerobic exercise and two days of strength exercises**.
