Visitors to one of England's biggest agricultural shows will be treated to a taste of the Yorkshire coast next week.

Our Discover Yorkshire Coast team will be exhibiting as part of the Welcome to Yorkshire stand at the 161st Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate from Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 July.

Whitby Flood Alleviation Scheme gets underway

Work on a £2.095 million scheme to help protect the Yorkshire coast town of Whitby from tidal flooding is now underway and is expected to be completed by the end of spring 2020.

The flood alleviation scheme will involve the construction of a reinforced concrete flood wall, 303 metres long with an average height of 0.95m, to the east side of the town on Church Street, to improve the standard of flood protection for 54 residential and 8 commercial properties.

D-Day veteran at Scarborough Armed Forces Day

The Scarborough Armed Forces Day Committee is delighted to be welcoming D-Day veteran, 94 year old Maurice Sadler, to formally take the salute at the town’s annual Armed Forces Day event on Saturday 29 June.

North and East Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards

This year’s North and East Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards were held on Wednesday 19 June and presented at the Principal Hotel York, to over 200 guests.

Martin Roberts, television presenter of shows including Homes under the Hammer and I'M A CELEBRITY... GET ME OUT OF HERE!, hosted the awards.

Safeguarding Week - 24 to 28 June

Advice on how to keep you and your family safe will be available on Monday 24 June at the Co-op in Whitby and Thursday 27 June in the Brunswick Shopping Centre, Scarborough between 10am and 2pm. As part of Safeguarding Week 2019, staff from Scarborough Borough Council, North Yorkshire Police and other local agencies will be giving advice about a range of safeguarding issues.

Action packed programme for Armed Forces Day

The final countdown to the 11th annual Armed Forces Day in Scarborough, one of the biggest annual Armed Forces Day events in the country, is underway.

On Saturday 29 June an action packed programme of events in the air and on the ground awaits the crowds that are expected to flock to the coastal town to pay tribute to the UK Armed Forces and share in the day’s celebrations.

New Cabinet reinstates public toilets

Our Cabinet has agreed to reinstate toilets in two locations in Scarborough.

The new Cabinet members had pledged before May's elections to address this major public concern.

The new Cabinet has approved temporary public conveniences on Royal Albert Drive for this year’s summer tourist season and the reopening and refurbishment of toilets near the Holbeck Clock Tower, just off Esplanade at a total cost of £51,000.

Armed Forces flag flying ceremony

Residents throughout the Borough of Scarborough are invited to show their respect for the UK Armed Forces by watching the special Armed Forces ‘show your support’ flag being raised during an annual ceremony in Scarborough next week.
 

The flag flying event, which will take place at 10.20am on Monday 24 June in the Town Hall gardens on St Nicholas Street, will mark the start of the week running up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29 June.

Centenary celebrations for Sea Cadets at AFD

Launch of Scarborough Town Centre Strategy

On Monday 24 June, we will host a public information event to mark the launch of our new Town Centre Strategy for Scarborough.

The event will take place at Scarborough Library on Vernon Road between 6.00pm and 7.30pm. A presentation about the new strategy and its associated action plan will be given. Information on how to get involved in the delivery of the strategy, including how to apply to be on the independent Town Centre Strategy Team, will also be provided.
