New Borough Mayor and Deputy Mayor

Cllr Joe Plant was today formally elected as Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough for the 2018 to 2019 mayoral year at the annual Full Council meeting of Scarborough Borough Council. He took over from Cllr Martin Smith who has been the Mayor for the last twelve months.

At the same meeting, Cllr Dilys Cluer was elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough.

The Mayor was born in Whitby and lives in the town with his wife Margaret, who will be his Mayoress for the year. They have a son and daughter and two grandchildren.

Pupils take to the high seas to celebrate Cook 250

Seven local youngsters and a teacher will feel the wind in their sails as they embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure sailing the high seas in a tall ship as Whitby celebrates the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first voyage to the South Seas.

Our Bereavements Services team will be holding an open day and information event at Woodlands Crematorium on Wednesday 16 May between 10.00am and 4.30pm, which aims to get people talking more openly about dying, death and bereavement and find out what end of life options are available to them and their loved ones. It will also give people an opportunity to see the recently improved facilities at the crematorium.

Incredible crowds for Tour de Yorkshire Stage Three

A wall of sound greeted Maximillian Walscheid as he sprinted to victory on a sizzling third stage of the Tour de Yorkshire.

The crescent-shaped slopes of Scarborough’s North Bay provided a perfect natural amphitheatre for the fourth year in succession and tens of thousands of fans bathed in temperatures hotter than Palma, Paris and Tenerife to watch another dramatic finish unfurl.

The total crowd of 650,000 had lined the 181km route from Richmond, taking the three-day total to a whopping 1.7 million!

With one week to go until the start of the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire, organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and ASO have unveiled more star names who are set to compete between 3 and 6 May.

Rio 2016 track gold medallist Owain Doull is set to be named in the Team Sky line up which includes British compatriot and two-time Omloop Het Nieuwsblad winner Ian Stannard.

As this year’s Tour de Yorkshire draws closer, Scarborough is gearing up to host another spectacular sea front finish – this year Stage 3 of the men’s race will finish in Royal Albert Drive on Saturday 5 May.

This year, the race takes place over four days for the first time - from Thursday 3 May to Sunday 6 May. All of the route on Saturday 5 May and most of the route on Sunday 6 May is in North Yorkshire.
