Tuck in at a Big Lunch in Scarborough

Councillor Chatt at the Big Lunch EventResidents, tourists and businesses are invited to tuck in to Scarborough’s annual Big Lunch festivities on Sunday 18 July at public venues across the town.

Nine separate Big Lunches are planned with everything from small-scale street parties for residents of individual streets to a large community picnic in Peasholm Park for residents and visitors.

The motto of the Scarborough Big Lunch campaign is “bring food, share with your neighbours, eat as a community” and residents are encouraged to bring along food - perhaps their signature dish - to share with their fellow Scarborians.

Scarborough’s Big Lunch is part of a wider community initiative of the Scarborough Urban Area Forum to promote neighbourliness and community spirit and is linked in with the national Big Lunch campaign, run by the Eden Project to encourage people from all walks of life to gather in communal spaces to “meet, share and eat”.

There will also be a various entertainment at each of the Big Lunches, from Morris Dancers to a Ferret Roulette!

Big Lunches are planned for:

Peasholm Park, noon-2pm – The site of last year’s Big Lunch festivities and open to residents and visitors. Some food has already been donated for the event from Scarborough Tandoori, the Glass House, Al-Frescos and the Coffee Bean. However, people are encouraged to bring along a picnic and something to share. Live music will be provided by the Shadows and there will be a cheerleading demonstration by the East Coast Tigers and a live ferret roulette!

St Andrew’s Church (Ramshill Road), 12.30pm-2pm – A low key community picnic within the grounds of the church. People are welcome to join in and bring a picnic. There will be a range of traditional games.

Trafalgar Square, starts noon – a traditional street party for Trafalgar Square residents in the centre of the square, organised by the Residents and Friends of Trafalgar Square. The Lunch will be a “teddy bears’ picnic” and there will also be a live band and a bouncy castle.

Falsgrave Park, 1pm-2pm – An open family picnic on the Springhill Meadow at the top of Falsgrave Park. This lunch is organised by the Friends of Falsgrave Park and will also be a “teddy bears’ picnic” with a prize for the best dressed teddy. There will be a child’s toy and book swap stall whereby children can bring a toy or book they no longer want and exchange it for something else. People are encouraged to bring a picnic plus something to share.

St Mary’s Church (Castle Road), 3pm-5pm – Organised by the Castle Ward Tenants and Residents’ Association. This Big Lunch will feature live music by Hamps Tramps, children’s face-painting, traditional games and races and people are encouraged to bring a picnic plus a dish to share.

Crossgates (Community Centre Car Park), starts 3pm – Again this event is picnic style with Crossgates residents encouraged to bring a picnic, plus something to share. There will a live morris dancing performance, live music and face painting.

Briercliffe / Gildercliffe Play Park, starts 3pm – Barrowcliff residents are encouraged to bring a picnic and something to share. Entertainment will be provided through a Briercliffe vs Gildercliffe tug of war, a large bouncy slide for the children and music.

Manor Road Park, 4pm-6pm – Organised by the Friends of Manor Road Parks, this Big Lunch will have live music, a raffle and a live footballing display. Residents are asked to bring a picnic and something to share.

All the Big Lunches will be visited by either the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Hazel Lynskey, or the Deputy Mayor, Cllr John Blackburn.
